Some years back, I attended a friend's wedding. As we enjoyed the proceedings, the DJ kept us entertained with some of the sweetest music. Sometime into the proceedings, the DJ made a very critical musical blunder and ruined a perfect moment by playing the wrong song.

I'm sure many didnt notice.... but I did. Guess which song he played?

It was Tamia's rendition of Careless whisper.

It's a beautiful song, but at that moment, it was a horrible choice.

I could clearly tell he was oblivious to his mistake, but the lyrics to that song are of regret and a love gone wrong. So instead of being a celebration of love, such a song adds a whole new dimension to what is meant to be a beautiful occasion.


Maybe I'm the only one, but have you noticed how most of the sweetest love songs seem to be tainted by infidelity? Not to sound righteous or anything, but the theme is always:

"my partner ain't around, and you look fine"

or

"I'll do you better than your partner."

So as a result, some of the most iconic songs, including one of my favourite jams of all time- Nelly and Kelly's Dilemma- tend to get betrayed by the lyrics... especially when I'm in a healthy relationship and all I want to do is celebrate my significant other. 

That's mainly because I pay particular attention to lyrics. I listen to every word. I put myself in the artist's shoes, connect with the emotion and get lost in the music.

I remember hearing "if loving you is wrong, I don't want to be right" some years ago. 

Sounds sweet right?

As I got deeper into the song, I found myself somewhat conflicted when I got to the part where he says "I know I've got a wife and two little kids, that love me just as much".

To put things into context, the song is about a married man, who is telling his 'mistress' that despite knowing their relationship is wrong, he does not want to be right. It was his reality I guess.


It's an undeniable fact that there's a lot of nasty stuff happening in the world. These songs dig into the experiences of so many people and that is why they strike a chord. Love doesn't always go the way we expect it to.

I am not here to judge though. In this article I wanted to celebrate love and so I chose a few songs to amplify it when it goes right..

The following list is a compilation of some of my favourite hip hop and RnB love songs. These are songs that you can enjoy and vibe to if you're in a healthy, committed and loving relationship. More importantly, each of these songs has a beautiful deeper message.

Why I chose these songs

With the exception of just one line, these are all hip hop and RnB songs about a healthy type of love. 
Despite some of them featuring the hardest rappers, I feel they shed their armour in these, and spoke from a real place.

Oftentimes we let ego get in the way. So I chose these songs because there's no ego involved. Just appreciation of something which many of us tend to take for granted nowadays- true companionship.

I also chose songs which celebrate a monogamous relationship. Not to frown on anyone's preferences but I felt it's time we start to celebrate values like forgiveness, compassion, loyalty, humility and selflessness.

In addition to other positive qualities these moral values are essential to building truly fulfilling and lasting relationships.

There's also this misconception about committed relationships being 'boring' so I threw in a few naughty gems.

More importantly, I chose these songs because there is a deeper meaning in each of them. At times the meaning is implied and in some cases, it's the mood and attitude of the song that you should pay attention to. I hope you will get it.

Love is a beautiful thing and it should be celebrated. One of the best ways to nurture and grow a true romance is by planting the right seeds. These seeds include the music we play and the messages we entertain in our minds.

Some messages might seem trivial, but over time we get conditioned to see things a certain way. A great example is how infidelity has become a norm or that love is all fun and games.

We need to be able to see things realistically, and at times the truth is that it requires some hard work, a little spicing up and a whole lot of forgiveness.
