My advice to local aspiring developers

Well, today I thought let me talk to fellow aspiring developers, particularly those in third world countries. This is just random advice... so you are free to ignore it if it suits you. Some weeks back I wrote an article talking about how there is an average of 2 companies achieving unicorn status [ a billion dollar valuation ] every day around the globe. These are companies from everywhere except Africa. Africa has only had a handful of unicorns and these only account for 0.5% of the global total. One of the reasons for that, is simply a matter of probabilities. If you have thousands of people all actively building something then you're more likely to stumble upon at least one great company. Then when that company grows it can nurture and reinvest in more companies of its own. I've met a lot of great developers with beautiful ideas, but they sit on those ideas and soon, years pass without anything being done. With this article I'm hoping to provide some insights and more

The case for funding African tech start-ups

"If you were in the States, you'd be far by now" my cousin quipped. At that time I must admit I slightly disagreed. I just thought it wasn't yet my time. Deep in my mind, I hold this belief that when you are truly good at what you do, roads will be built to where you are... regardless if ' where you are ' is in the middle of nowhere. However, I recently stumbled on an article which said over 80% of companies which received venture funding in Africa were owned mainly by non-Africans. The bulk of the remaining 20% were owned by Africans living outside the continent. Not too sure what that implies, but I found it somewhat of great concern. Then yesterday I read another article on Crunchbase , which gave a rundown of stats on tech unicorns since as far back as 2012. For those who might not be aware- i n business, a  unicorn  is a privately held  startup company   valued  at over $1 billion. Since 2012, close to 1000 companies have achieved that status. In total,

The smartest street kid

A former colleague once told me a story of a wealthy doctor whose car hit a street kid whilst driving around town. The streetkid was so badly injured that he needed medical attention. Acting in speed, the doctor took this kid, put him in his car and rushed him to the nearest hospital. Feeling bad about what had happened, the doctor paid all the medical bills and made sure the boy was well taken care of. Eventually, the boy recovered and was to be discharged. So the doctor asked him if he had anywhere to go or a place to stay after being discharged. Upon realizing that the child had no home, the Doctor invited the child to stay with him in his beautiful mansion. That way he could monitor his recovery and continue paying for any medication that was needed. The doctor went a step further, gave him the best food, bought him beautiful shoes, clothes and even got him a haircut. See, over time he grew close to the boy and made the decision to adopt him as his own child. This meant that he wou

Check out my new app- CheerApp

THE ARGUMENT I'm sure we all agree that 2020 has been one hell of a year. Many found themselves jobless, whilst some even lost their loved ones, relationships took a knock and staying indoors has taken its toll. All this compounded with life's everyday challenges could have a devastating impact on one's mental health.  Cheery or CheerApp is a platform designed for anyone who is either having a bad day, feeling sad or going through some stuff. Many are aware of the need to stay healthy, but oftentimes we focus on the physical, and neglect our mental health. It takes a great deal of self awareness to understand one's reality and take appropriate action to control it. So whilst some might reach out for help, the majority tends to lack an effective coping mechanism and they suffer silently alone. This affects their concentration and consequently their performance in all aspects of life. Over time, sadness, anxiety and paranoia evolves into depression, schizophrenia and a ho

How I got started with Sketchware

Background As I explored the Playstore sometime in June 2018, I stumbled upon an app to create other apps. Out of curiosity I downloaded it, did some research and played around with it. I soon realised I could actually create a “real” app from scratch and make money. See, some years earlier I had downloaded Android studio and done a few lessons on programming. So I had a basic understanding of Java and android programming, but this new app that I had found, used simple drag and drop features and you could actually run the app on your device or send your app to friends in just a few clicks. I was not a professional programmer but using this app I could easily create “proper” mobile apps without cracking my head over code.  You can check out my app made using Sketchware; Business Builder- Small Business Management Suite here . Fast forward to a few months later and I had created an app that I felt was ready for the big leagues… Play Store baby!! Note, that I was at a low point financiall
