THE ARGUMENT

I'm sure we all agree that 2020 has been one hell of a year. Many found themselves jobless, whilst some even lost their loved ones, relationships took a knock and staying indoors has taken its toll. All this compounded with life's everyday challenges could have a devastating impact on one's mental health.

Cheery or CheerApp is a platform designed for anyone who is either having a bad day, feeling sad or going through some stuff. Many are aware of the need to stay healthy, but oftentimes we focus on the physical, and neglect our mental health.

It takes a great deal of self awareness to understand one's reality and take appropriate action to control it. So whilst some might reach out for help, the majority tends to lack an effective coping mechanism and they suffer silently alone. This affects their concentration and consequently their performance in all aspects of life. Over time, sadness, anxiety and paranoia evolves into depression, schizophrenia and a host of other disorders. In some of the most tragic instances- the effects include physical injury, suicide and murder.

It is undeniable that most people are broken inside, so a little love and kindness could go a long way in helping them pick up the pieces. That does not require any money or resources... just the will to open up your heart. I believe most of these situations can be avoided by simply reaching out for help or simply opening up to someone in a supportive, non-judgemental environment.

In most developed countries people see therapists(you might know them as shrinks). Not even because they have a mental issue or psychological disorder... but in many cases, simply to let out what's bottled inside... to think out loud... to vent... to cry... to cope. In the poor countries however, many are taught to toughen up at an early age. Most cultures frown on men showing vulnerability or weakness. Women are groomed to stay in unhealthy relationships, simply because "that's what a woman should do". As these people grow, this eats them up and the world is left shocked when reality rears its ugly head and unveils the end result.

OUR SOLUTION

Cheery therefore seeks to remedy that by providing an online environment where people can connect, interact and share positivity. A platform where people can simply talk, listen and more importantly... spread love to those that need it. A place where we can simply let down our guard, be vulnerable and fully human without having to worry about image, facades or trends.

It must be noted however that our solution isn't something new or unique, and neither do we claim it is flawless. (That was never goal in the first place.) Our main objective is simply to provide help and emotional support to those who need it.

We intend to do this by providing the following-

FEATURES:

• a Public forum where users can share messages, images and text.

• Free Resources which users can download for self improvement, development and coping with different life situations

• Private messaging to allow individuals to make personal connections, build friendships and provide support

• An inspiration station to help motivate, inspire, cheer up and give you a good laugh

• Counselling

and so much more.

More importantly, I personally would appreciate your patience and tolerance, especially where we lack or fall short. Remember, this is only the beginning and thus our pledge is to make you proud in our quest for excellence over time.

Cybersecurity Essentials: How To Stay Safe On The Internet

Hi there, my name's Likhwa and welcome to Building Africa's Next Tech Unicorn. on this platform I give a behind the scenes look at what it takes to build a startup within the African context. In today's video, I'll be doing something different- I'll be talking about how you can stay safe online. This isn't meant to scare you or get you all paranoid, but to help you be more vigilant in protecting yourself and your loved ones from cyber threats.  Most people underestimate the dangers of the internet, but the more I am exposed to it, the more I wish I didn't need it. At times I wish I could just disconnect, get rid of all my devices and not have to worry about the constant threats that come with being online. I believe some of us are fortunate by default- especially those who live in countries like my Zimbabwe- because we hardly use credit cards to transact online and even when we do, its not like we have a lot of money- otherwise we would be a hacker's g...
