Is your Facebook name a relic of the past? Maybe a childhood nickname or an outdated username just doesn't reflect who you are anymore. Thankfully, Facebook allows you to update your name with a few simple steps. This guide will walk you through the process of changing your Facebook name on both desktop and mobile app versions.

Before You Begin:


  • Keep in mind that Facebook has restrictions on how often you can change your name. You can typically only change it once every 60 days.
  • Facebook also prohibits names containing symbols, unusual punctuation, or offensive language.
  • It's advisable to use your real name as Facebook encourages authenticity.


Changing Your Name on Desktop:


Navigate to your profile:

Click your profile picture in the top right corner of the Facebook homepage. This will open your profile page.



Access Settings:

Look for the downward arrow in the top right corner and click on "Settings & Privacy".



Open Settings:

In the Settings & Privacy menu, select "Settings".



Find the Personal Details Section:

Under "Accounts Center", you'll see the option for "Personal details". Click on it.


Open the profiles section:

In the Accounts center, click profiles and then select the specific Facebook account.


Open the Name section:

In the chosen profile select the Name by clicking on it as shown below:




Update Your Name:

Enter your desired first and last name in the respective fields. You can also optionally include a middle name.



Review and Save:

Once satisfied with your changes, click "Review Change" to preview how your new name will appear on your profile. If everything looks good, proceed to click "Save Changes".


Changing Your Name on the Mobile App:


Open the Facebook App:

Launch the Facebook app on your smartphone or tablet.


Access the Menu:

Tap the three horizontal lines icon (or hamburger menu) located in the bottom right corner (Android) or top right corner (iPhone) of the app.



Scroll Down to Settings:

Navigate down the menu and tap on "Settings" under "Settings & Privacy".



Open Personal and account information:

Within Settings & Privacy, select "Personal account and information" under "Account".



Locate the Name Section:

Under "Personal account and information" settings, you'll find the option for "Name". Tap on it.



Update Your Name:

Similar to the desktop version, enter your desired first and last name.



Review and Save:

Click "Review Change" to preview your new name, then tap "Save Changes" to confirm the update.


Congratulations, your Facebook name has been successfully changed!
